The 2019 Dance Worlds got off to a fantastically gritty start with the Open Coed Elite Hip Hop division today. The tricks were flying, the choreography was down in the deep bass, and the themes drew us into the performances. Comprised of up to 15 male and female dancers, each team delighted the raucous crowd, and there were even a few surprises.
Out of the 21 teams that took the floor this morning, England claimed the top spot after the Semi-Final round. Angels Dance Academy – ADA Dark Angels brought it harder than the rest, and created a good amount of buzz. The program brought home bronze in Open Hip Hop at The 2018 Dance Worlds, so they're no strangers to the podium. All eyes will be on the Dark Angels tomorrow to see if they can upgrade to gold this year.
Next Level Dance Co-Supremacy took the second spot today with an unforgettable themed routine that had the crowd screaming. They opened with an incredible human tower, and moved through the routine as Samurais, slaying the competition.
Rounding out the top three was Strut Performing Arts - Open Coed Hip Hop. They used impressive ground work and partner lifts to secure their spot in Finals tomorrow.
The third and last American team to qualify to Finals, Velocity Dance-WOAH, got the crowd on their feet as they came through decked out in bright-red hockey jerseys and the tough attitudes of hockey players.
Several other U.S. teams put on incredible performances, but fell victim to the limitations of how many teams can move on from each country. Pittsburgh Poison All Stars – XV and Gold Star – TEAM X were two standouts in that category.
Heading to finals in fifth, The Architects Dance Company – Colossus punched their ticket with a high-energy routine packed with difficult footwork. They are the second team from England in the top five after Semi-Finals. There's certainly no lack of an international presence in this division, as evidenced by teams from Colombia, Australia, Scotland, The Netherlands, Ecuador, Mexico, and Dominican Republic also qualifying to tomorrow’s Finals.
ADA Dark Angels have a strong lead heading into tomorrow, but the fight for the podium will be extremely tight. In Hip Hop, just about anything can happen depending on how into the moment the teams are. They'll all be looking to engage with the crowd, nail their tricks, and dive into the music headfirst. We can’t wait to see how this division turns out tomorrow.
Good luck to everyone in Finals!
