Senior Small Contemporary/Lyrical Star Steppers Step Into The Top Spot

In the Senior Contemporary/Lyrical division, every single team came to play in Prelims.

Just to be clear, by “play,” we mean they performed with such intensity and passion that it felt like we ran an emotional marathon… and we loved it. There wasn’t a single routine that wasn’t jam-packed full of emotion, and it was lovely to watch.

This category was one of the toughest to separate the good from the world-class, because every team had their own story to tell, and they all told it very well.

On Day 1, no one told their story better than Star Steppers.

They used an emotive, powerful routine to seal the lead after the first round. They performed with such grace and ease that you would never have known that it was a competition. They left their hearts on that floor, and they were dually rewarded for it. They will enter tomorrow’s Finals knowing that they have the ability to be World Champions.

Not far behind them is 2018's gold medalist, Dancer’s Edge Studio. They employed a plethora of unique skills and choreography to convey their message; however, the highlights for this team were their absolutely gorgeous turn sequences.

Following them closely in third place is last year’s bronze medalists, Dancin’ BlueBonnets. They took full advantage of the entire floor and had dramatic and lovely moments on every inch of it. The technique displayed by both of these teams was mind-blowing and quietly beautiful all at once.

Fourth through seventh place are extremely close and occupied by equally talented and beautiful contenders. Dance Dynamics, Dance Precisions, Mt. Eden Ballet Academy (from New Zealand) and South Coast Freestyle all made the case that they should be among the top ranks leading into the Finals.

Rounding out the finalists were: Dancin’ with Roxie, Power of Dance Plaris, 5678! Dance Studio, Dance Etc Inc, Foursis Dance Academy, and Golden Motion Elite. There is not a weak link out of any of these teams, and tomorrow could be a new day for any of them.

What this is all going to come down to tomorrow is which team can combine their terrific technique with a story that makes the audience feel connected in some way. There are 13 stories to be told in Finals, and they’re all worth hearing. We can’t wait to see which team will rise like the cream of this absolutely fabulous crop.
