Cal Poly upsets Oklahoma State after a 6 point deficit to continue on to finals tomorrow!
Day 2 of the 2022 College STUNT National Championship took place this Saturday and during CLUB Game #4 the Cowboys from Oklahoma State took on the Mustangs from Cal Poly. Both of these programs have competed in STUNT since its inaugural year and are very invested in this sport as well as it’s growth!
In the first quarter Oklahoma State gained possession in the partner stunt round and began with Routine 8 which drew a forfeit from Cal Poly gaining the first point of the match. Cal Poly continued to be fierce competitors throughout the first quarter though Oklahoma State swept the rounds to take an early 4-0 lead.
Going into the second quarter, Cal Poly had possession and began with Routine 6 and gained their first point. Height and execution really play a big role in the Pyramid and Tosses quarter and both of these teams displayed just that. The Mustangs and Cowboys tied in the second round and both showed confidence though Oklahoma State extended their lead 7-2 at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Oklahoma State took the first point gaining possession and calling Routine 8. While the Mustangs forfeited the round unfortunately the Cowboys did not score a point due to minor deductions on their side. Cal Poly scored another point in the third round of quarter three and during the fourth, both teams tied ending the third quarter 9-4.
Heading into the last quarter Cal Poly needed to take 7 of the 9 points awarded to tie the game and finish the fight. In this quarter teams go head-to-head with a routine consisting of partner stunt, tumbling, and ending in tosses and pyramids. The first routine called was Routine 1 and Cal Poly took home 2 of the 3 points in tumbling and pyramids. Making the score 10-6. In round two, Cal Poly again took 2 of the 3 points inching their way up in points and putting them back in the game with a score of 11-9. Cal Poly scored 3 points to tie it up and send the game into overtime with a score of 12-12.
In overtime, teams compete in the same format as quarter four, starting off with Routine 1. If the teams continue to tie, they will go onto compete Routine 2 in double overtime. Every little detail matters more than ever for these two teams and whoever wins the round advances on to the CLUB Championship game on Sunday.
Cal Poly fought hard, and fought back from a six-point deficit to tie at the end of overtime gaining three out of three points and advancing them to the final game of the championship!
